As the date draws closer, the 12 days plan in Japan starts to take shape. We have completed Day 2 on Shinjuku, Harajuku and Shibuya. Going through the guide book, there are so many temples and gardens in Tokyo. It reminded me of Europe’s Castle. After a while, all the castle and cathedral starts to look the same. I remember I was on one tour where Paris was the last city. By the time we arrived at the Notre Dame Cathedral, all the charm and amazement were gone, or rather overshadow by the numerous cathedrals that we visited on the way. I am afraid of the same scenario in Tokyo, by the time we reach the some of the major parks or Japanese Gardens, it would have been like… oh, here goes another garden… Anyway, that is yet to be experience, and I am keeping my optimism.
Japan official tourist site is a great resource for planning. If you decided not to get a guide book, this official site is a good base to start you off. It showcase all the attractions a guidebook would usually recommends. The only downside compare to the guidebook is the narration that the guide book provides. When you read the guide book, it feels like a friend telling you where to go, what to do, what to avoid, where to stay and where to eat. In the official site, its just a showcase of what Japan has to offer with little narration. It suffice if you do not want a guide book. I particularly find the Walking tours to be comprehensive, and it is the base of our time in Tokyo. Day 2 for instance, we will follow all the walking tour for Shinjuku, Harajuku and Shibuya. Each walking tour duration is 2 hours, and that is if we do not stop to soak in the ambiance or goes into the museums. With that I think we will take the whole day going through those places.
Another thing I find interesting is that the city is full of Museums, there are so many of them takes a peck at your pocket. It started to seams like the Museum Grutt Pass that gives you unlimited access to all museums for only Y2000 makes sense. I don’t plan to spend all my time in museums, but there are just so many of them, not to go to any is just impossible. And the planning goes on…
