Sundays are the day where, one is sad because Monday is the next day, while one struggles to enjoy the what ever hours are left of this fine non-working day. Not only it rains in the morning, making it perfect to stay under the sheets for a few extra hours, the weather at the later day was perfectly sunny, great for hiking. The day started with the continuation of yesterday’s quest to look for a hotel in Tokyo. That quickly transformed to laundry day when the sun starts to inch out. Lunch was from our favourite Malay Rice shop, just can’t get enough of the curry and kunyik fry chicken. Had a date with the cobbler, mending 4 shoes to be collected after 5 and soya bean curd was the dessert for teatime. After collecting the shoes, we bestow upon the Penang Youth Park and discovers another trail to go up the Penang Hill. This one gets to oversee the tuff club. Blogging in the evening, and May Lin made it to page 183 on the deathly hallows.
One week in, and my wife still has not finished the deathly hollows yet. The buzz over the price war have subsided and I believe the bookstores have moved on. Popular is giving a 25% discount for popular card members and a free ‘t’shirt (while stock last), general public gets a 20% discount. There were some bloggers who screams the drop of quality read or the death of retail bookstores with this invasion of hypermarts into the book domain. You can read the responses on this site. I believe that those who stood by the sides of the bookstores are truly an elitist and probably have not bought anything pirated nor downloaded anything illegal before. With all these hoo haa, many fail to identify the real ‘bad guys’ here. Yea, sure, the hypermarts were the easy targets, but failed to realize that they did everything within the law and it was mere a business strategy. Many forgot about the pirates. Read about them here and here. Why are there no one crying ‘death to the pirates’? Especially those called for the death of the hypermarts. The ones that really going kill the book industry will be the pirates, in the sea and online. The ones that degrades reading quality are the pirates. And yet, no one seams to care…

I don’t have a particular favorite charity. I contribute when ever I can, and it is usually on monetary means. As the world progresses, there are going to be many that are left behind, and some are consumed by natural disaster. There are thousands of foundation and efforts to ensure these who were left behind are taken care off. Some are religious, but it is just basic human nature. The sad part is that many of these foundations are truly ineffective. If you check out charitynavigator.org, you will find that some of the charities operating cost consume more than 50% of the total income, this means that the money meant for the cause were less than 50%. This reminds me of the time, where I was having lunch and a guy was selling post cards for the city’s cancer center. At the bottom of the post card pack, there was a disclaimer that 10% of the card profit goes to the center. 90% of it were operating cost. It just doesn’t make sense, and if it was this little money to go into the charity, why bother doing it at all. This is why I truly believe, to do charity, one needs to get directly involved. I only donates to the reputable charity organizations, and gets involved in those smaller ones. I remembered once, I went to an orphanage and sold drinks at their charity fair. I gathered some money from a few friends and we all went to buy a heap of can drinks and sold all of them off. We donated all the money to the children’s home.
